We would invite applicants who are looking to join an innovative and dynamic small team of stroke physicians to look after the second busiest stroke service in the Anglian region. We are consistently scoring an A in the national audit and were shortlisted for a BMA Award in 2019.

Main duties of the job

The postholder will participate in:

This is a full time substantive post and will complete the team at the Ipswich Hospital site as part of the ESNEFT strategy for Stroke. It is specific to the Ipswich site.

7 day inpatient stroke rota ( hyperacute and acute care) – 28 inpatient beds

Daily TIA clinics and weekly outpatient clinics reviewing new referrals and stroke follow ups

Leading and developing the educational requirement of the stroke service

There is the option to participate in additional activity including participating in the acute medicine on call rota, or as an alternative the regional telemedicine rota.

We deliver care services from two main hospitals in Colchester and Ipswich, six community hospitals, high street clinics and in patients’ own homes. We are building a new elective orthopaedic centre for ESNEFT at Colchester Hospital. It will be one of the biggest centres in the country and will ensure we can retain complex and low volume cases locally for the people we serve.

We are also now building a £7million specialist interventional radiology and cardiac angiography unit at Colchester.

At Ipswich we are investing £35million in a new Emergency Department and co-located Urgent Treatment Centre, with additional diagnostic imaging kit (MRI and CT). There’s a £5.3million molecular diagnostic laboratory soon to open at Ipswich, and works begins soon for a new Breast Care Centre and a Children’s Unit.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

There will be a rolling weekly one in four rota with four components:

Care of HASU patients and acute stroke calls

Care of ASU patients

TIA clinics Monday to Friday

Outpatients clinics

Weekend work will including HASU ward round, TIA clinic and ward reviews

 Days off in lieu will follow a weekends or bank holidays on duty

The successful applicant will be expected to join a rota (one in six with prospective cover) to provide weekend and bank holiday Stroke Unit ward rounds and assessment of high risk TIA referrals. There is participation from an acute medicine and elderly care colleague in this rota.

Programmed activities This is a 10 PA contract based on the recommendations from the BMA . This is split into 8.5 PA’s direct clinical care and 1.5 supporting PA’s.

Direct clinical care 8.5PAs on average per week (includes clinical activity, clinically related activity and predictable emergency work). Supporting professional activities 1.5 PAs on average per week (includes CPD, audit, teaching, appraisal)
