Senior Technician – Civil

Trinity House

Ready for your next step and a rewarding career where you can make a real difference?

As an island nation, the UK is almost entirely reliant of the safe arrival and departure of shipping from its ports, with around 95% of the UK’s goods entering or leaving the UK by sea. Every single person in the UK consumes goods daily that have been imported by ship. Manufacturers, energy companies, supermarkets, hospitals and many more vital services rely on ships and seafarers for their imports. Some 65 million sea-borne passengers globally rely on shipping for access to public services, employment, business and holiday travel every year.

While Trinity House is a charity dedicated to safeguarding shipping and seafarers, its role as a General Lighthouse Authority is essential to the prosperity of the UK.  The capability and development of our procurement and contract profession is vital to delivery our mission and vision, ensuring we continue to provide value for money services as a leading maritime organisation.

Your area of responsibility will be from St Bees in Cumbria around the coast of Wales to Hartland Point in North Devon, with a requirement for occasional travel to other parts of the UK. You will be responsible for all aspects of civil maintenance in the lighthouse estate, including assessing and supervising contractors, completing surveys, drawing up estimates and contract specifications.  You will manage CDM requirements and arrange consents when necessary.  In addition, you will assist with compiling and managing the civil budget and ensure that health and safety standards are maintained. The role will require a significant level of hands on work where use of contractors is not practicable.

This role covers a wide geographical area with a variety of projects to co-ordinate, often in remote locations, you must be adaptable and flexible with a working knowledge of building and planning regulations as applied to modern and listed buildings.  A good level of experience in contract management is also required, combined with proven supervisory skills and a thorough understanding of HSE and CDM requirements.  A relevant technical qualification at BTEC Level 4 or equivalent experience is essential as is a high aptitude for working with IT.

The post will be based in Swansea, but will involve extensive UK travel and extended time away from home and the depot. This will include staying as part of a small team on offshore lighthouses. Duties will involve working with helicopters and boats and in a physically challenging environment; thus a suitable level of fitness is required.
