Why does this role exist?

BRE has a long-standing history in delivering solutions to the construction products market. These services range from traditional life cycle assessment (LCA) studies to verified Environmental Product Declarations (EPD) and supply chain assurance standards such as the BES 6001 Responsible Sourcing and the BES 6002 Ethical Labour Sourcing Standard.

These certification and verification streams have been developed with strong industry participation over decades and serve the wider sustainability sector in better understanding the impacts of the design choices people make in their projects.

Due to the continued success and expansion of the BES 6001 and BES 6002 certification and verification schemes, the Sustainable Products Team are looking for an additional consultant to join the team.

The position will be based at BRE Watford (with flexible working) / home and will involve visits to manufacturer sites and their offices predominantly throughout the UK and Europe. On occasions, overnight stays will be required.

The value this role will add:

You will work closely with the Responsible Sourcing Scheme Manager, the Sustainable Products Team Lead, and wider Sustainable Products Team to:

  • Own and manage certification projects, attend client meetings, and prepare written proposals and technical reports
  • Deliver fee earning work contributing to the team’s financial success
  • Undertake BES 6001 and BES 6002 technical surveillance audits
  • Drive future improvements and innovations in the assurance schemes design
  • Ensure robust and credible outcomes in accordance with relevant standards by which the certification and verification schemes are developed and operate
  • Seek and review customer and external stakeholder feedback and identify means and ways of improving performance through enhanced systems and processes
  • Support technical experts in the upkeep and evolution of the underpinning Sustainable Products science base, to ensure that product development is scientifically led
  • Support the development of digital platforms to strengthen the Sustainable Products supply chain assurance portfolio offer in the market
  • Monitor and uphold health, safety and wellbeing both personally and for any external visitors accountable to this role
  • Own personal professional development, ensuring that mandatory training and competency requirements are maintained in addition to other professional development needs as required by the role

What experience and skills does the role need?

  • Excellent knowledge of responsible sourcing/sustainable supply chains either in Quality/Technical/Ethical Management roles within manufacturing, retail, auditing or consulting.
  • A working knowledge of audits and certification and its role in managing product supply chains.
  • Strong technical knowledge of the Organisational Management System Standards
  • Knowledge of sustainability legislation and initiatives such as science-based targets, SDG’s, UNGC, CDP; supply chain assurance programmes and initiatives such as ETI, SMETA and SA 8000;
  • Knowledge and understanding of international standards and legislation relevant to BES 6001 & BES 6002
  • Excellent communication skills; an ability to understand and interpret customers’ needs and deliver a service and/or product which exceeds customers’ expectations
  • Able to build effective relationships both internally and externally, be a brand ambassador for BRE
  • Able to demonstrate integrity in dealing with confidential and sensitive information.
  • Able to prioritise workload and demonstrate initiative and independence to react to changing priorities
  • Able to demonstrate excellent project management skills by managing several projects at a time.
  • Excellent interpersonal and customer relationship building skills
  • Willingness to travel in the UK and Europe to attend client and stakeholder meetings
  • IT literate and extensive knowledge of MS office etc.

Desirable

  • Degree (or equivalent) in relevant product related sector such as ethical trade, responsible sourcing, sustainable products
  • A good understanding of the UK construction sector supply chains and the role and expectations of each party.
  • Knowledge and awareness of Sustainable Products certification and verification schemes, their customers and users and the wider construction industry expectations.
  • Track record of creating, launching and managing products / tools for responsible sourcing.
  • Knowledge of ISO and CEN standards relating to product assessment
  • Knowledge of BREEAM and/or the BRE business
  • Membership of an appropriate professional institution or organisation, e.g. IEMA
